In Davis v. Bandemer, the controlling opinion of the Supreme Court forged middle ground when it entered the partisan gerrymandering conflict for the first time, but limited the Court's involvement to extreme cases. This careful compromise has been an important guidepost as the Court struggles to differentiate routine partisan redistricting from unconstitutional partisan gerrymandering.
